Welcome to the Family!

A former coworker of mine posted that she had some kittens that she desperately needed to find homes for. Having been considering getting a kitten, I told her that I would take one or two. We ended up with two! Two brothers whom the kids named Batman and Harold!

Visit to Shedd Aquarium

The kids and I took the Southshore train into Chicago on very hot Summer morning and visited the wonderfully air-conditioned Shedd Aquarium. After waiting in a huge line in the hot, smoldering sun for about ten minutes, I looked at the much shorter member's line and at the signage depicted the cost and benefits of membership, I realized that it was cheaper to buy a one-year family membership to the Shedd Aquarium than to purchase tickets for all of us just for one day! Score! We got out of the horribly long line and made our way the the Member's Entrance. We were quickly on our way to see many interesting fish, crabs, and other aquatic creatures. The new jellyfish exhibit was spectacular! This was all-time favorite exhibit. The kids loves them, too. They also really enjoyed the penguins and seeing the new baby dolphin on the day of his public debut!

Potowatami Zoo

I took the kiddos to Potowatami Zoo on one afternoon when it was actually pretty nice out and not a sweltering 90 degrees or above (as were most of the days this summer). We had a wonderful time! One of the best things that we saw was a lion roaring! None of us had ever heard or seen a lion roaring live before--it was really neat!

(Pictures to come...)

Tommy Plays T-Ball

This summer, I signed Tommy up for T-Ball. He was very nervous and shy during the first few practices. Brad had to go out on the field with him to get him to do anything. Otherwise, he just kind of stood there, not responding to the coaches or other players. His behavior was not surprising since this was the first time he had ever been in any organized activity. He, simply, was not used to taking orders from strangers or to having a bunch of people watching his every move! Likewise, he was unfamiliar with the game and its rules, so he was unsure of himself. After a few weeks, however, he was no longer shy, at least not very, and really started to have fun playing!

Fifth Grade Graduation

To mark the end of elementary school and the beginning of a new phase in the kids' lives--the middle school phase--Isabelle's school held a graduation, including a ceremony, slide show, pictures, and a picnic at the park next to the school. It was quite an event! I cannot believe my baby is a 6th grader now! When did that happen?

Isabelle's 11th Birthday, Phases 1 & 2

This year, luckily, we were able to have Isabelle's birthday party on her actual birthday, so the family and friends all celebrated together. Usually, we have to do one family celebration and one friend celebration for the kids, and I always take the birthday kid to a movie (hence the three phases). For Isabelle's party (phase 1), we did a bowling party. The bowling alley supplied us with more than enough greasy, gooey pizza to fill everyone's belly, and I bought two cakes that I brought along to the alley. One cake was a rainbow layer cake--it was pretty awesome! The other was a marble cake--it was also pretty tasty! We sang to Izzy, we ate, Izzy opened presents, we bowled, the kids play arcade games and got ice cream from the parlor connected to the bowling alley! It was a blast! And the best part is very little clean-up--I love the bowling parties! Isabelle's special/big gift this year was her own cell phone. She was stoked, of course! For her birthday movie, we went to see The Avengers in 3D; Uncle Tom accompanied us to the movie. We all loved it! What a great day!

First Grade Science Fair--Peyton!

For the Science Fair this year, Peyton decided to do an experiment involving bread, hand soap and hand sanitizer. Specifically, she wanted to see if hand soap and/or hand sanitizer would stop the growth of mold on bread. The verdict--hand sanitizer does, indeed, stop the growth of mold on bread. Hand soap..um..not so much..
Peyton did a great job and earned second place in the Science Fair this year! And to top it off, the local library chose her project for display! Way to go, Peyton!

Mr. Man's 4th Birthday!

The girl's helped me decorate red balloons with spider webs and Spiderman faces and quotes to complete the decor for Tommy's Spiderman themed party! Everyone had a great time! Tommy was very excited more with the opening of the gifts than with the gifts themselves!
